Getting online in Cambodia is cheap and easy. The only real question is whether you buy a travel eSIM before you fly so you are connected the moment you land, or grab a local Cellcard or Smart SIM once you arrive for the best price per gigabyte. This guide covers both so you can decide before you go.

eSIM before you land

A travel eSIM installs on your phone before departure and activates when you arrive, so you have data for your taxi, maps and messages immediately. It is the most convenient option for the first few days. The trade-off is cost: travel eSIMs charge more per gigabyte than a local SIM, and some unlimited plans throttle speed after a fair-use cap.

Local SIM: Cellcard and Smart

Cambodia's main networks are Cellcard and Smart. A tourist SIM with a generous data bundle is inexpensive and available at the airport and phone shops in town. If you are staying more than a few days, a local SIM is almost always cheaper than a travel eSIM. Bring your passport to register the SIM.

Who should pick which

Short trip or want zero hassle on arrival: an eSIM. Longer stay or moving here: an eSIM for the first day or two, then switch to a local Cellcard or Smart plan for the best ongoing value. Coverage is strong in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and reasonable in most towns.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an eSIM-compatible phone?
Yes. Most recent iPhones and many Android flagships support eSIM, but budget and older phones may not. Check your phone's settings for an eSIM or add-data-plan option before buying.
Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM?
Almost always, per gigabyte. A local Cellcard or Smart tourist SIM is the cheapest way to get a lot of data. An eSIM wins on convenience for the first day or two.
Can I keep my number on WhatsApp?
Yes. A data-only eSIM or SIM does not change your WhatsApp or Telegram account, which are tied to your existing number. You just get local data.
