Outside my day job I build and publish practical software projects, with a particular focus on automation, data and tools that solve real problems.

These are independent projects built in a personal capacity. They are not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Cisco, and they are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Why Cambodia

Cambodia is a country I have a strong personal connection to and one I want more people to understand, visit and appreciate. GlobeScraper originally grew from trying to make practical information about living in Cambodia easier to find. This Projects section extends that idea into software and open data.

Cambodia is publishing an increasingly useful range of public datasets. My goal is to explore what an independent developer can build by connecting those datasets carefully, making them easier to use and presenting the results in ways that are useful to ordinary people, developers, researchers, businesses and public institutions.

Where a tool uses official data, the original source is clearly identified. Where GlobeScraper derives, normalises or estimates something, that is labelled separately.

Cambodia Data Bridge currently serves 16,478 official administrative entities from the 2025 registry: 25 capital and provinces, 210 municipalities, districts and khans, 1,661 communes and sangkats, and 14,582 villages.

Joined local data around the official administrative hierarchy

Concept preview

Combine demographic, infrastructure, economic, housing and public-service data around Cambodia's official administrative hierarchy.

Why: Useful Cambodian datasets exist across different publishers and formats. A commune-level view would show what becomes possible once they are joined around a consistent geographic structure.
Who it is for: Researchers and universities, Planners and public institutions, NGOs working at commune level, Developers building local services

Current stage: Depends on Data Bridge, which now provides the shared administrative key. Next step is assessing which published datasets can be joined to it lawfully and reliably.

National Housing and Rental Observatory

Official housing statistics alongside high-frequency market signals

Concept preview

Combine GlobeScraper's high-frequency rental observations with official Cambodian economic, demographic and property-market data.

Why: Official statistics provide authoritative macro indicators while online listings provide faster signals about asking rents, supply, inventory and market activity. Each is more useful next to the other.
Who it is for: Renters and people relocating, Housing researchers and economists, Planners and public institutions, Developers and investors
Data required: GlobeScraper rental observations — GlobeScraper, already ingested

Current stage: GlobeScraper already collects the market side. The remaining work is assigning official commune codes to listings through Data Bridge, then reconciling with official series.

Important. Online asking rents are not completed transaction prices. Any published comparison will label the two separately.

Cambodia Disaster Exposure

What sits inside a hazard area

Concept preview

Estimate the people, villages, schools, health facilities, roads and other assets potentially exposed within a disaster or hazard area.

Why: Historical disaster data becomes more operationally useful when combined with current population and infrastructure information on a consistent geography.
Who it is for: Emergency planners, NGOs and humanitarian organisations, Researchers, Communities and local institutions
Data required: Cambodia Commune Boundaries — UN OCHA, from the Department of Geography, already ingested
Population by administrative area — National Institute of Statistics, not yet available
Facility and road datasets — Various, not yet available
Current stage: Boundary data is ingested and its 2018 to 2024 coverage is already documented in Data Bridge. Exposure modelling has not begun.

Important. This would not be an emergency warning system. That would require official live hazard feeds and operational validation.

How easily people can reach schools and healthcare

Measure access to schools, healthcare and other public services using population, road-network and facility data.

Why: Counting facilities is less useful than understanding how easily people can actually reach them.
Who it is for: Education and health planning, Researchers, NGOs, Local communities

Identify potential crash clusters and areas where road-safety analysis may be useful.

Why: Granular crash data, road geometry and contextual information can support evidence-based investigation of road-safety patterns.
Who it is for: Transport researchers, Road-safety organisations, Public institutions, Universities

Current stage: Blocked on data. Sufficiently granular and lawfully reusable crash-location data has not been identified.

Important. Nothing here would designate a location as an official blackspot. Only an official source can do that.
